Seizure Drug Shows Promise Against Alcoholism

All Things Considered, October 9, 2007 · Alcohol-dependent patients who received topiramate, a seizure medication, had fewer heavy-drinking days, fewer drinks per day and more days of continuous abstinence than those who received placebo, according to a study in the Oct. 10 issue of Journal of the American Medical Association.

Elaine, Thank you for bringing this article to our attention. The future of mental health and substance abuse treatment lies in our increasing understanding of the brain. Medication that gives us a helping hand in restoring normal functioning by reducing craving (and its interference with attention and learning)may finally improve recovery rates for substance addiction. Much yet to learn but this is a hopeful development, especially for the many people who find current recovery programs insufficient. Nice coincidence for me too as I am teaching the chapter on substance abuse in Abnormal Psy this week and will refer my students to your link also.
